Via dell’Abbondanza

Via dell’Abbondanza references a solution adopted by the locals to face tough times, in which abundance was nothing but a dream.
History tells that, next to the Seminario Vecchio (the ancient seminary), there were the Magazzini dell’Abbondanza (“warehouses of abundance”) that the street was named after. Opened in the 1600s, the warehouses were stocked with food goods as an aid for people during periods of famine. In the same area, a similar strategy was adopted by the bakery in Via Mazzolari until it shut down: bread was distributed to those in need, free of charge.
