BARLEY WATER

Reggio emilia

Bar Fiesta - Piazza San Prospero 4/b

Barley water is the most popular drink. In the past, Reggians enjoyed drinking it at kiosks of the Piazza Grande, now Piazza Prampolini. It has been drunk since the middle ages, this excellent thirst quencher was the city's trademark drink until the 70’s. When bars were renovated and the only producer of this chosen drink closed down, the nearly all traces of the acqua d’orcio were lost. The infusion based on liquorice roots, fennel seeds and orange peel is diluted with water. Nowadays, acqua d’orcio has returned to the menu at an ice cream parlour which celebrates Reggio Emilia's traditions.
