Despite moving to Ferrara at a young age, Ludovico Ariosto, the great poet of the 1500s, is native of Reggio Emilia.
Nevertheless, the hometown of the writer of Orlando furioso (The Frenzy of Orlando) seems to not have a precise memory of his first home. An oral legend once told of an ancient portrait of the poet placed over the building between Via del Palazzolo and Via Farini. Before becoming a pharmacy, the Apoteca Ludovico Ariosto was another candidate location as the poet’s home. Finally, the most credible theory: Ariosto was born in the same building where his mother’s family resided, which has collapsed and has been moved between Via Squadroni, Via Torrazzo, and Via del Cristo.
