Reggio Emilia was born at an intersection, or rather, an encounter. No fighting, no acquaintance, and not even love at first sight, but a secret hidden at the point where the Via Emilia and Via Roma cross ways. The plaque positioned on the ground indicates the Gromae Locus, the point where the groma – a surveying instrument used by the Romans – was to be positioned. Just there, the intersection between the Cardo Maximus (the north-south road) and the Decumanus Maximus (the perpendicular east-west road) was calculated. From the point indicating the exact center of Reggio Emilia, the city started growing and developing.
