Palazzo dell’Arengo - Piazza Cavour

The stones of Palazzo dell’Arengo reveal the secrets of its past. A plaque on one of the columns of the loggia suggests that the building was erected in 1204 as the seat of the Palatium Comunis, the people’s council, by will of Rimini’s podestà Mario de Caronesi. Legend tells of another important stone present in the loggia where the administrators resolved the city’s issues and the notaries public kept track of finances: the lapis magnum. The insolvent were condemned to sit down, three times and in their underwear, on the ‘debtor’s stone’, pronouncing out loud the words “cedo bonis” (“I give up all my possessions”).
