Piazza Tre Martiri is the setting of a historic phrase that has also become part of everyday language. After having gathered his full army in Piazza Tre Martiri, standing atop a stone Julius Caesar announced: “Alea iacta est!” The decision was made and there was no turning back: Julius Caesar’s armed troops would’ve crossed the Rubicon (well, another modern expression!), which marked the border of the Roman State. The stone commemorating the moment ‘the die was cast’ is found in the square, close to a bronze statue of the illustrious leader. In reality, Julius Caesar writes to have pronounced those words in Ferrara, not Rimini: in any case, the city has a deep link to the consul and to Roman history, as it was one of the Empire’s most strategic bases.
