Fontana dell'Acqua Acetosa - Via Enrico Elia

A medicine for the kidneys, the spleen, the heart, and thousands of other diseases. Such are the benefits of the Acqua Acetosa (literally the vinegar-tasting water) listed on the plaque over the fountain located in the Parioli neighborhood. With its light and pleasant sour taste, it was once considered one of the best lithic waters in Italy already in the 1600s, and up until the 1900s it was distributed by the acquacetosaro who roamed around town selling it off his cart full of bottles. Due to pollution, the prodigious fount no longer exists, and the liquid running down the pipes of the fountain is not the ferruginous original, but simple tap water. No need to carry bottled drinks if your itinerary in Rome includes a stop at the Fontana dell'Acqua Acetosa!
