Fontana della Terrina - Via della Chiesa Nuova

A fountain with a cover, so hard to picture, may exist in no other place but Rome. La Terrina (the tureen), called as such due to its shape perfectly resembling a serving dish for soup, is found in Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, moved from its original position in Piazza Campo de' Fiori, where a cover-less copy is present today. Placed among the market stalls, the fountain was used to keep fruit, vegetables, and plants fresh, and to collect garbage at the end of the workday. When Pope Gregory XV realized this, he ordered for the fountain to be blocked with a dome-shaped travertine cover, and the locals immediately noticed the resemblance with a tureen. Under the cap of the 17th-century Terrina there are no more tasty market goods, nor soup, but just water.
