THE SECRET GARDEN
Rome
Coliseum - Piazza del Colosseo, 1, 00184
Think of a park in downtown Rome that has hosted over 600 plant species, some coming from the Eastern world and some solidly native since the 1st century A.D. Believe it or not, we’re talking about the Coliseum, the amphitheater built by Vespasian for the gladiatorial bouts. Used throughout the years as a deposit and a thief hideout among other uses, the symbol of Rome has been and still remains a natural garden.
Mallow, barley, fig trees, olive trees, dandelions, wood sorrel, not to mention orchard grass, are just few of many examples of the vegetation that has grown at various levels of the massive amphitheater and, century after century, has also been a green lung for the Eternal City. Get ready to enter the dandelion’s den!
