A CYCLOPS HOUSE
Siracusa
Carcere Borbonico di Siracusa - Via Vittorio Veneto 227
The building that once hosted the city prison, located on the island of Ortigia and built during Bourbon rule, is nicknamed A casa cu n’occhiu (the one-eyed house) due to the eye-shaped sculpture placed above its entrance door.
The bas-relief was meant to represent justice, which observes the citizens and scrutinizes their actions, just like an eye of God looking and judging.
Nevertheless, surveillance wouldn’t have been very solid had it relied solely upon the stone-carved eye. Today the Casa cu n’occhiu awaits restoration and will be redesigned as a cultural center.
