What was not long ago an important location for the city’s economy has now become a natural reserve just outside Syracuse.
The salt mines have been active until the 1980s, when they shut down due to the fall of the market. Located at sea level on a flat surface and just the right level of humidity, the mines have become a point of reference for migratory birds – who always stop here to refuel – and they also host quite rare plant species such as the papyrus plant and the southern dwarf iris. Within the reserve there is a 12-km (7.5 mi) path for a pleasant walk or bike ride in the salty air.
