Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime - Via del Santuario

When you raise your eyes to the sky, you will immediately notice the town is overlooked by the Santuario della Madonna delle Lacrime (shrine of the Virgin Mary in tears). The circular structure extends into a 74-meter tall cone and has been built in honor of a miracle related to the weeping painting of the Virgin Mary that it preserves. The Shrine designed by the French architects Michel Andrault and Pierre Parat who won an international contest, was completed across a 28-year period, hindered by strong criticism related to its modern style. The structure symbolizes a tear falling to the ground or a prayer that, along with the sail-type elements of the church’s roof, rises in the sky of Syracuse.
