Siracusa

Castello Maniace

The Maniace castle is named after the Byzantine general Giorgio Maniace who, around the year 1000, conquered the city ruled by the Arabs.
The imposing squared structure with a tower at each of its corners, surrounded by a creek that extended out to sea, had the purpose of protecting the city from the attacks coming from Porto Grande.
Along with its military function, the decorated marble door hints a second use for the castle: the existence of a second habitable floor hypothesized by numerous researchers may be the proof that the top floor was used for logistics purposes, but the bottom floor hosted recreational activities, just as it hosts shows and concerts in modern day. You’re in safe walls: enjoy.
