The Pillirina is a cave located on Punta del Gigante (giant’s point), the outmost point of the Peninsula of Maddalena, reachable only on foot through the trails starting in Via Capo Passero.
Its name, meaning pilgrim in Sicilian, quotes a legend that makes this corner of Sicily with crystalline water and untarnished nature even more fascinating.
A girl fell in love with a young sailor, but since her family did not approve their relationship the two were forced to meet in secret, inside the cave.
One day, the girl jumped off the cliffs that had given birth to her love, once she realized that the sailor who’d left on a journey would never return.
Still today, the local sailors claim that on full moon nights the Pillirina appears again, waiting for her true love.
