Art has often reused existing elements, and in the Cathedral of Syracuse, this rule seems to have been followed literally.
In the baroque and rococo style structure, decorated with columns, statues, and narrow windows, the doric columns that held the Temple of Athena (Athens) in the 6th century A.D. are still present and perfectly integrated in the architecture. Despite the earthquake that destroyed numerous towns on the island in 1693, the Duomo and the ancient columns of the Greek temple remained intact.
Not even the shaking ground could bring down what is, and has always been, the holiest place in Siracusa.
