MARY OF THE FIELDS

MARY OF THE FIELDS

Stezzano

Santuario della Madonna dei Campi - Via Santuario 49

It started as a 12th-century shrine in honor of the Virgin Mary, a few miles away from the center of Stezzano; just one of many saints scattered across the countryside to invite the people to take a break from their fieldwork and pray. One century later, the Virgin Mary holding her son Jesus appeared to a pious woman in the village, and to immortalize this miracle the believers built a little church and named it, indeed, Madonna dei Campi (Virgin Mary of the fields).
From the year 1500 onwards, more miraculous events occurred and the small church became a large place of worship that hosted myriads of pilgrims. The church continues to be a place of peace, prayer, and art, surrounded by nature just like when it lived in the fields.
