TALLEST TOWER IN TOWN

Stezzano

Piazza Locatelli 1

As well as being the tallest monument in the small village of Stezzano, the belltower of the Church of St. John is the tallest tower in the entire province, surpassing any construction, even in downtown Bergamo, in terms of height. Built in 1739 over an old watchtower, there are no sentinels guarding the brick and stone tower, but four instrument-playing angels made of special sedimentary rock from the nearby Brembate, and a wooden statue covered in copper plates, representing St. John the Baptist. The statue of the town’s patron saint was fixed to a mobile structure, in order to rotate it for the saint to indicate the direction of the wind. In the belfry, there are 8 bells manufactured in the mid 1950s, which remind the people of Stezzano to raise their eyes to the most towering building in the area.
