THE MORLANA CANAL

Stezzano

Roggia Morlana - Via Roggia Morlana

Under the cement of Stezzano runs a treasure called rogge (canals). These channels were connected to the rivers and have made the area rich and fertile: in fact, they brought water to the houses, allowed the fields to be irrigated and the animals to drink, they were used by craftsmen, and most importantly for leather tanning. The Roggia Morlana, which crosses Stezzano through the area of the Santuario della Madonna dei Campi and runs along the road that bears its name has incredibly ancient origins: it was created artificially towards the end of the 12th century to run in parallel to the Serio River.
It’s no coincidence if the seal of Stezzano includes a watercourse.
