In 1630 the plague was knocking on Stezzano’s door as it had already hit numerous towns around Bergamo. The parish priest Don Bartolomeo Grumelli gathered all the townspeople on a Sunday in June and made a promise with the believers: once the epidemic was over, they would have built a new, enormous church. And so the plague arrived in Stezzano too and didn’t even spare Don Bartolomeo, but the people remembered the pledge made in the old Church of St. John. Despite there sickness had gone but poverty flourished, the men and women put together all the forces they had to build the new Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, used as an auditorium today.
