A VOLATILE STORY
Taranto
Cattedrale di San Cataldo - Piazza Duomo
Under the so-called “golden sky”, the paneled ceiling that was completely gilded after a fire, a part of the Cathedral of San Cataldo tells a quite curious story.
A mosaic created in the ‘60s of the year 1100, only partially visible today, depicts the Aerial Flight of Alexander the Great, a completely invented literary anecdote concerning the life of the Macedonian. The mosaic, which rightfully became a part of artistic and literary tradition, shows in its tiles the moment in which the emperor took flight and rose in the sky.
It was a fantasy subject that, just like flight itself, made artists and booklovers dream, and remains intriguing still today.
