Borgo Antico

The long mural on a ceramic panel decorating the promenade along the sea in the Borgo Antico (old town) tells the story of Falanto and the founding of Taranto. When he rebelled against the power of Sparta, Falanto was banished from the city, but before his departure he consulted the Oracle of Delphi to ask when the right time would be to leave the town and undertake his voyage. According to Apollo’s oracle, the right time would be “when it would rain out of the blue”. When he saw his wife Ethra, who’s name meant blue sky, crying, Falanto left and founded his own town that he named Saturo, just a few miles away from what would later become the city of Taranto.
