The Taranto coast is home to special and abundant mussels, and it is all thanks to the citri, the fresh and salted water currents that create an ideal habitat for the microorganisms which the mollusks have a sweet tooth for.
Furthermore, the special mussels may stay fresh outside of water for a long time, and this has facilitated transportation even when fast and refrigerated vehicles were lacking.
