Campiello de le Gatte

The Campiello delle Gatte, de le gate (cat’s field) in Venetian dialect, is a little square in the Castello sestriere. The curious name suggest a corner of town always populated with cats living in front of colorful houses and filling the piazza with their meows, but this isn’t the case. The term de-le-gate refers to the pontifical delegates, who resided in the adjacent palace of the religious Order of Malta, before Palazzo Gritti served the same purpose for the papal diplomats. As stated on a plaque, the poet Ugo Foscolo also lived in Campiello de le Gate, and who knows if a cat kept him company in his childhood home…
