Three puteals in one piazza are a rarity even for a rare city like Venice, where these structures are very common despite having been out of use for quite a while. Not to be confused with the hole they stand above, the puteals are a true protection for the wells and were a handy support for the buckets full of water. Like the puteal in front of the Church of San Trovaso, the largest of the three, in 1500s-style, the structures were normally circular. Often they were decorated with a coat of arms to indicate the family that had commissioned them. As seen on the most ancient puteal, a grid to avoid accidental – or less accidental – falls often covered them.
