If it has become one of the symbols of Venice, it surely needs to thank its beauty. But only few know about the Ponte di Rialto’s more rugged traits: the bridge, one of the main commercial crossroads of the city, has resisted and shown its immense strength throughout history. In the past, the connection between the two banks of the Canal Grande river was a wooden draw-bridge. With the weight of the hundreds of people crossing it daily even then, the bridge collapsed twice. It is only at the end of the 1600s that a stone bridge was built, maintaining the double row of shops developing along its arch.
