Despite what the calendar says, the festive and amusing atmosphere can be breathed all year round. It is certainly thanks to Burlamacco, the mascot created by the futurist artist Uberto Bonetti that first appeared on a poster for the carnival parade of 1931. Smiling, in his white and red diamond-pattern suit, the clown-like figure named after the Burlamacca – the town’s artificial river – has become one of the symbols of Viareggio and the official mascot of the Carnevale.
