There is a fine line between Viareggio and Egypt, born around the second half of the 1800s. Among the Tuscan artists who decided to move to the Arab country there was a professor of drawing from the Royal Technical School of La Spezia: Enrico Nistri.
Throughout his experience in Egypt the artist was influenced by the arabesque and the decorated motifs typical of Islamic art, from the towers dominating the African sky to the ogival arches of the Arab buildings.
Nistri decided to literally bring back with him the architectural and decorative elements seen in Egypt in building his residence in Viareggio, which in no time was nicknamed “la Moschea” (the mosque).
