Piazza delle Paure - Monumento ai Caduti and Piazza Garibaldi

Three bronze figures on a stone base are the discussed monument dedicated to the fallen of the Great War. The episode represented by Lorenzo Viani and Domenico Rambelli is that of a sailor shot down, then re-born from the trenches and following the light towards the future. The large bodies crying out the violence and pain in Italy during the beginning of the 1900s have been the object of criticism, especially negative, and have even risked being melted down. Because most people in Viareggio didn’t appreciate the statue, the square hosting it was nicknamed Piazza delle Paure (square of fear).
