Via Montramito

Via Montramito is a long road that crosses Viareggio and leads straight to the sea: it is no surprise that it is the place where the city was born. In fact, Viareggio was named after the road formerly named via regis, connecting the fortified town to its ruling city Lucca. In the Middle Ages, a wooden tower was erected on the “royal road” as a lookout for protection from sea attacks. The same road was used to carry to Lucca the material necessary for the construction of a new watchtower, which was named Turris de Via Regia in its honor.
