In the 90s, the Japanese family from Kikuoka was approached by people from Luxembourg to invest in the Grand Duchy. The idea was to build a golf course to attract Japanese people to Luxembourg. The investors planned to have an airport close by to bring the tourist directly to the hotel. The local people were not happy with transforming their farming land into a golf course and the idea of the landing strip quickly was abandoned. The day of the official inauguration of the golf course has been marked by the resistance of the local villagers. State officials as well as high ranked politicians couldn’t even access it as everything was blocked and therefore had to find their way through the fields. Ultimately the golf course and hotel got accepted within the community and became part of the village of Canach: the first members of the golf were the protesters!
