Tilburg

Sint Annaplein, Tilburg

Art Enthusiasts
In 1866, in the former palace of King Willem II, the first Tilburg Rijks HBS school opened. Vincent van Gogh was one of the first students to report. The young Vincent, who would later become one of the most famous Dutchmen of all time, started his first lesson there. Incidentally, it was only discovered in 1957 that van Gogh once lived in Tilburg and went to school here. That was the reason to equip the current building, at the St. Annaplein 18-19, with a bronze plaque which includes a self-portrait of Vincent. Vincent stayed in Tilburg for less than two years and the reason for his departure is unknown. Tilburg also has the Vincent's Art Room to memorize him, which can be found at De Spoorzone. Visitors can get an impression of the education in drawing around 1866 where they used charcoal and pencil! Vincent however quickly stepped away from that pencil and did a great job with paint!
