Bilbao

Funikularreko Plaza, s/n, 48007 Bilbo, Bizkaia

This funicular railway connects downtown Bilbao to the top of nearby Artxanda Mountain, with its park, restaurants, hotel and sports complex. Since the late 19th century, residents of Bilbao have been enjoying day trips to Artxanda Mountain. This custom resulted in the construction of a casino and bars where visitors could drink txakoli (a slightly sparkling dry white wine typical of the Basque Country). The idea to build a railway to the top of the mountain was first put forward in 1901, but the project was not completed until 1915. Damaged by bombing during the Spanish Civil War, the funicular was reopened in 1938. Hop on at the departure point, located a short walk from the Guggenheim Museum.
