From the street below, you may wonder how to access this bridge or why it’s there. Calle Campanario is the one street in the old town of Donostia that is higher at one end, with a bridge that allows pedestrians to cross over Calle Puerto below. Local legend has it that a young sailor hanged himself from this bridge when he returned home from sea only to discover that his beloved had died of a broken heart during his absence. Today, Calle Campanario bridge more generally gladdens the hearts of those who cross it, offering a very different perspective of the old town’s busy streets, as well as great views of the port and the bay of San Sebastián beyond.
