St. Margaret’s Well, Binsey Lane

Around 1.5 miles from Oxford, in the village of Binsey, you’ll find St. Margaret’s Well, next to the medieval church of the same name. The well is dedicated to St. Frideswide, the patron saint of Oxford, whose prayers are said to have brought forth healing waters which cure blindness. Lewis Carroll apparently took his inspiration for the Treacle Well in his book Alice in Wonderland from St. Margaret’s Well. Keep your eyes open for a glimpse of Elsie, Lacie and Tillie!
