LEANING TOWER OF BRISTOL

LEANING TOWER OF BRISTOL

Bristol

Temple church, Bristol

The History of Architecture
At the centre of Bristol is Templar Church, built by the Knights Templar. The church’s tower, rising up 34 metres, shares something in common with the famous Italian Tower of Pisa: it leans close to 1.5 metres relative to the axis of the ground. During WWII, this characteristic almost condemned the structure to demolition. Members of the Corps of Royal Engineers, believing that the tower was leaning as the result of bombing and risked collapsing, ordered it knocked down. Happily for architecture lovers, locals mobilised to defend their tower, which had always leant to one side since its construction in the 14th century. Have a look yourself, but careful not to get a stiff neck.Temple Church, Bristol, City of Bristol BS1
