Fragments of the ancient Burton Abbey provide the unlikely garden feature of an upscale restaurant. A stroll around the grounds of The Winery reveals stone remnants of a massive convent that was founded by the 7th-century nun St. Modwen. Why do some believe the site has healing properties today? Many of Modwen’s miracles are said to have taken place there. Legend claims that her namesake well had waters with curative powers, while a shrine from the 15th century shows the saint with a staff said to ease women’s labour pains.
