Denbies Wine Estate started when Adrian White, a local water scientist and entrepreneur, got bored. On a whim, he bought the Denbies estate, but the sloping land wasn't suitable for the cows and pigs he wanted to raise. “How about growing wine grapes?” suggested his neighbour, a geology professor with a knowledge of France’s Champagne region. Thus was born Britain’s largest vineyard. Since its founding in 1986, Denbies has collected international gold awards for its sparkling, rosé and dessert wines. Take a tour, visit the 360° cinema or eat at one of two restaurants. The estate also features an all-weather vineyard train, a green grocer and the Surrey Hills Brewery - not bad for a man who's practically teetotal!
