THE SECRET GARDEN

Edinburgh

General Register House, 3 W Register St, Edinburgh EH1 3YT

You may not think you have a reason to enter the imposing building on Princes Street of the General Register House, where Scottish citizens’ marriage, birth and death certificates are kept. And yet. Walk past the statue of Wellington and through the double doors, then ask to see the Archivists’ Garden. You will be led to the very back of the building where there is a small botanical garden. Here you can admire 57 different types of plants and flowers, all related in some way or another to the collective Scottish memory. Roses and, of course, thistles, but also less well-known plants, all arranged harmoniously by theme: birth, death, marriage, or simply, famous Scots. A perennial favourite: the white rose of Scotland.
