THE INSPIRATION BEHIND DIAGON ALLEY

Exeter

Gandy Street

With a narrow cobblestone lane, fantastical shop windows and quirky store signage, you could almost mistake Gandy Street for Diagon Alley. If you did, you wouldn’t be far off, as JK Rowling spent three years in Exeter and likely modelled the wizarding world’s most famous (only?) shopping street after this ancient Saxon passageway. You may think you see the exterior of Gringotts Bank on the corner of Gandy and Little Queen streets, but that’s actually The Vaults, Exeter’s premier gay bar. This must-visit street offers much more than just ambiance. Spend a few hours browsing independent boutiques and galleries. Then pop into a bar or restaurant for sustenance.
