ATTEND VICTORIAN SCHOOL DAYS

Hitchin

41 - 42 Queen Street

Head back to school - way, way back - with a trip to the British Schools Museum. Founded in a former malt house, the first Lancasterian School was only for disadvantaged boys when it opened in 1810. It grew in size and inclusion throughout the years. Today, you're encouraged to don period costume on your visit. Use the dip pen and inkwell found under the desk lid in a classroom that dates to 1837. Remember to sit up straight on a narrow bench in a monitorial schoolroom, designed for one master to teach up to 300 students. But unless you want to wear a dunce cap, don't dare to use your left hand. This was strictly forbidden in Victorian times.
