A FOLLY OF FAITH
Kettering
Rushton Triangular Lodge, Rushton
This building is definitely one of the quirkiest in England. The Triangular Lodge, an architectural folly, was built in the late 16th century by Sir Thomas Tresham, a prominent recusant Roman Catholic landowner, as a testament to his faith. The number three, symbolising the Holy Trinity, is apparent everywhere in the building with its three walls, each with three gables, its trefoil windows, and its Latin inscription and play on words Tres testimonium dant, meaning “the number three bears witness” or “Tresham bears witness” (Tres being the pet name his wife gave him in her letters).
