AN EQUINE HAVEN

AN EQUINE HAVEN

Leeds

Swan Lane, Eccup

Big brown eyes, a gentle disposition and a cashmere-soft coat... there’s a lot to love about donkeys. That’s how The Donkey Sanctuary founder Dr. Elisabeth Svendsen MBE felt when she started the charity in 1969, inspired by the sight of seven abused donkeys at an Exeter market. Today, the Leeds sanctuary is one of several locations that have provided care for more than 15,500 donkeys. But this is no equine retirement home. These sweet-natured animals play an important role in the lives of children with special needs, who come here weekly to pet and ride them. Visitors are always welcome. In fact, admission is free, as the charity depends wholly on the public’s goodwill for financial support.
