A CASTLE RUN AGROUND

A CASTLE RUN AGROUND

Linlithgow

Blackness

There’s nothing friendly about Blackness Castle’s formidable grey stone walls. The fortress, with a pointed bow and towers resembling masts, is dubbed 'the ship that never sailed'. Indeed, from the water, Blackness Castle looks like an enormous vessel run aground. Built along the Firth of Forth, this imposing structure has been a royal residence, a garrison fortress, a state prison, an ammunition depot and today an imposing monument owned by Historic Environment Scotland. Anything else? Oh yes, you can also add film and TV location to the castle’s résumé. Discover the dramatic backdrop of the 1990 film version of Hamlet, starring Mel Gibson; the BBC mini-series Ivanhoe and the time travel series Outlander.
