DIGGING UP THE ROSE

DIGGING UP THE ROSE

London

56 Park Street

Workers uncovered a priceless piece of theatre history while making routine excavations for an office block in 1989. The Rose was the first theatre in Bankside, built in 1587. Visit the venue where William Shakespeare learned his trade, and where Henry VI Part I and Titus Andronicus had their premieres. On the spot where one theatrical era began another one ended, when Laurence Olivier gave his last public performance to raise funds for the excavation. On Saturdays, The Rose hosts free Open Day film screenings. Discover the playhouse's colourful history and find out about plans for the future. The venue also stages Elizabethan and contemporary plays.
