London

8 Hyde Park Place

Just opposite leafy Hyde Park, search for a stone plaque marking the infamous Tyburn Tree Gallows. First home to the King's Gallows, the site was used for hangings from the 10th century onwards - often to the thrill of spectators. Under Queen Elizabeth I, the Triple Gallows was erected. Allowing for three condemned to hang at once, it's been nicknamed Tyburn Tree, Triple Tree and the darkly humorous Deadly Never Green. Nearby, nuns maintain a centuries-old vigil to Catholic victims. Step inside their convent to see the Shrine to the Martyrs. Let the silence sink in. Look upon the family crests of the martyrs. Reflect on your own misdeeds - and be thankful that Tyburn Tree has since been felled.
