THE MERRY QUEEN ANNE
London
St. Paul's Churchyard, London
Queen Anne, who reigned over Great Britain from 1702 to 1714, was nicknamed “Brandy Nan” for her love of drink. When her statue was erected in 1712 in front of the entrance to Saint Paul’s Cathedral in the City, it drew snickers. With her back to the Cathedral, the statue of Anne faced a pub. The pub has since closed. But Queen Anne still stands. Which, given her reputation, is quite an exploit. St. Paul’s Churchyard, London EC4M 8AD, United Kingdom
