THROWN IN THE CLINK

London

Clink Prison Museum, 1 Clink Street

The expression "thrown in the clink" means "put in jail", but where did it come from? Right here at The Clink Prison. For over 600 years from 1144, this was one of England’s most notorious prisons. It numbered among its inmates not just murderers, thieves, drunkards and harlots, but also religious and political adversaries. The Clink Prison Museum stands on the site of the original jail. Experience what life was like as a prisoner, with original artifacts including restraining and torture devices. The museum also provides a fascinating insight into the harsh realities of medieval London.
