THE 'SPOON MONSTER'

THE 'SPOON MONSTER'

Sheffield

Foyer of the Millennium Galleries, Arundel Gate

Inside the Millennium Gallery stands a sculpture entitled Barking up the right tree by artist Johnny White. It was commissioned in 2001 to reflect Sheffield’s history as the epicentre of the cutlery industry and the fabulous collection of silver and metalware housed in the Gallery. This enormous sculpture almost defies description! The tines of forks form long eyelashes on a giraffe-like head, whose bristly mane of knife handles leads down to the spoon-covered trunk of a surreal three-headed tree. The affectionately nicknamed ‘Spoon Monster’ comes to life at the press of a button.
