HOLIDAY AT A ROMAN BATH HOUSE

Welwyn

Welwyn Bypass

Slip into your finest bathing toga for a day out at the Welwyn Roman Baths. Haven't got a subligaculum (that's a Roman swimsuit)? No worries, the spa's boiler actually went out nearly 2,000 years ago when the conquering Romans retreated. What they left is a remarkably intact bath house with rooms for water of varying temperatures. Uncovered in 1960, the partially excavated site lies under a motorway, encased in a cavernous steel vault. It was likely part of a large villa that some theorise served as a hotel for travellers of nearby Roman roads. See for yourself how the ancient Romans revelled in refined bathing culture.
