Kiliç Ali Pacha mosque is the oldest in the Galata neighbourhood. According to the official history the mosque was the work of an important Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. But the Turkish researcher Rasih Nuri has a surprising theory. According to him, the famous Spanish writer, Miguel de Cervantes also worked on the construction of the building. Nuri maintains that Cervantes, wounded during the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, was taken hostage by the Ottomans and was forced to work on the architectural plans for the mosque. A visit to Kiliç Ali Pacha is therefore a must for his fans.
